My Role

I focused on collaborating with my colleague on contextual inquiry while aiding my teammates on the presentation and public speaking. Additionally, I also co-developed the low fidelity wireframes and further worked on the mid and high fidelity of the designs while applying the Google material design system for 1.5 weeks. I was part of a team of 4 who worked together in person for 2 weeks.

Honest Burger History

Founded in 2010, Honest Burgers has been operating across 8 cities across the UK, serving its customers’ local beers and burgers using fresh ingredients. Founders Tom and Phil emphasised the importance of producing their own fresh burgers and chips, and nothing is served frozen, except for their milkshakes!

The Challenge

In this scenario, the Honest Burger stakeholders requested the team to introduce an in-seat ordering system that made their dining experience more efficient and enjoyable. They also saw an opportunity to leverage existing customer habits by introducing a mobile app that allowed ordering and payment on their table. Our stakeholders required us to include features such as:

  • •  Ability to order food and drink from their table
  • •  Allow a group of customers on the same table to place orders together
  • •  Handle bill splitting and payments

The Problem

Users need an easier way of splitting the bill fairly amongst friends because when the bill is delivered, the situation can become awkward.

Discovery Phase

User Research

To understand our customer’s actions, we conducted site visits to our client’s and competitors’ restaurants to observe how customers behaved while dining in. We also interviewed the workers of the restaurants about offered service and payment methods.

We followed by conducting 12 user interviews in a span of 2 days. My team and I needed to further understand how restaurant customers behaved and see their frustrations while they dine at restaurants.

Define Phase

User Persona and Empathy Map

Our persona, Jacob, was based on our user interview’s behaviours, motivations and pain points identified during the discovery phase. We developed Jacob to help the team focus throughout the process of developing the app.

To develop a clear description of Jacob’s paint point, we created the problem statement to keep his frustrations in mind in the process.

We believe that by providing an app which allows Jacob to split the bill as he and his friends see fit, we can reduce the frustration of the bill splitting moment and maintain the harmony between Jacob and his friends.

Structuring of Honest Burger App

Once my team and I understood Jacob’s goals, motivations and frustrations, we began to draft the app. We created the user flow to understand what Jacob’s will see and his actions during his new experience when using the Honest Burger app.

Low Fidelity Wireframes

User Testing Insights

After conducting 9 user tests, my team and I learned that customers often prefer the experience of being catered and assisted during their ordering process when needed while ensuring that ordering food is quick and easy

Once we finished the first round of user tests, we created mid fidelity screens using Sketch and applied our insights to the new wireframes.

Mid Fidelity Wireframes

User Testing Insights

I further worked on new iterations individually and developed the visual design of the Honest Burger app. I followed the material.io guidelines to ensure its usability.

After conducting 3 user tests, I noticed that most of the comments and suggestions can be related to Jakob’s Law. According to Jakob’s Law, users expect websites and apps to function the same way that other websites and apps they know.

Deliver Phase

Last Minute Thoughts?

Looking back at my experience working with a team has been overall positive for me. It allowed me to know my strengths and contributions to the team while seeing my weaknesses and the skills that I can improve in future projects.

It was also helpful that we came from different backgrounds as this gave us new perspectives and helps us combine all of our ideas. One of the difficulties we encountered were creating the digital wireframes. As we were using Sketch, we found it difficult collaborating and sharing our design ideas due to the program not being collaborating-friendly, and had to Slack or email the screens to each other.

Looking back at the project, if I had to redo the project again, I would use the tool Figma to ensure that my team and I can collaborate on the wireframes together. I would redo the Style Guide and work on the typography and explore colour schemes to give the Honest Burgers app a more modern and fresh look.
